Laura J. MacKay
Copywriter & Editor

My collection of reference books

How Can I Help?

eed words? You’ve come to the right place. As visuals increasingly dominate our communications and writing devolves into texting, I, as a copywriter and editor, stubbornly remain a crafter of the written language in all its nuance. Lots of people can write, but few have put in the thousands of hours of practice it takes to do it really well. Whether you’re a business or a novelist, I have the skills to help you say exactly what you need to say.

Copywriting

What’s missing from your marketing copy?

Great copy is solid copy   There’s something missing from a lot of marketing copy: real writing. Great copy requires more than sales tricks. I wrote, edited, and copyedited professionally—newspapers, books, magazines—for many years before turning to marketing. My writing is rock solid: intelligent, crystal clear, persuasive, and free of the kinds of errors that can put off readers whose confidence you need to win.

Focused storytelling   It’s all about getting across your story, your unique brand. And one of the most powerful tools you have for doing that is clarity. Having worked on branding and positioning with the communications design and development firm Titanium, I can understand your story. As a former news journalist, I can tell it—clarity being my specialty.

Strategic Web copy

Does your site read as good as it looks?

Excellent writing counts   It’s easy to focus on the design, navigation, and functionality of your Web site. But the copy is also key to your brand image and the experience of your visitor. My writing is intelligent, crystal clear, persuasive, and free of errors that can undermine the professional image you need to succeed.

Sell your brand first   Web copy rises to the level of strategic when it conveys your brand—who you are and what you stand for—to your readers, even if all they do is click through your headlines. Having worked on branding and positioning with the award-winning communications design and development firm Titanium, I know how to tell your story.

Web-specific copy   Studies show that the average time spent on a Web page is less than 30 seconds. So your copy had better be brief and clear. That’s harder than it sounds. But as a former news journalist and a professional copy editor, I know brief, and I know clear.

Editing

Shouldn’t you look your best?

We all need editing   No one’s perfect. Even strong writers can benefit from professional editing. Good editing makes you look good and can only further your business, professional, or creative goals.

    • Businesses   Crisp, finely crafted copy is effective copy. It can only enhance your professional image. Sloppy copy will do the opposite. Enough said.

    • Creative writers   Sure, in creative writing we take liberties, but clarity still rules. As E. B. White said, “Be obscure clearly.” Editing is part of crafting your vision. As a writer myself, I am attuned to preserving your voice.

Experience you can count on   Formerly copy chief for a major magazine, the Walt Disney Company’s FamilyFun (2 million subscribers), I have also copyedited plenty of books, articles, and business materials as a freelancer. I bring cogency and clarity to the worst of prose and sensitive fine-tuning to the best. See my book editing credits.

Your goals, your budget   I’m flexible. Together, we’ll determine the level of editing that suits your needs.

    • Light copyediting   A straightforward cleanup of typos, misspellings, misplaced punctuation, grammatical errors, and inconsistencies.

    • Comprehensive editing   All of the above plus recasting sentences, reducing wordiness, correcting lapses in logic, fact-checking, rearranging or eliminating paragraphs or chapters, suggesting areas for expansion, and so on.

    • Rewriting   When you need a complete makeover.

Got a manuscript?   See my manuscripts page for more information on how I work and how I can help.

Commendations

“Laura is one of the best writers I know. She’s the whole enchilada: talented, smart, experienced, thorough, careful, and completely responsible. She understands branding, she’s really pleasant to work with, and she runs on clean process.”

—Mitch Anthony
Brand strategist

“Laura is an exceptional writer and editor. We have worked with her on more projects than I can recall, which is the best testimony to the professionalism and quality of her work.”

—John Bidwell
President, Bidwell ID

“While there are many positive things to say about Laura’s work, what strikes me most each time we turn to her for help is her ability to quickly grasp complex material and then simplify it in elegant prose so that anyone can understand it—all without losing any of the richness of the topic.”

—Laurie Breitner
Principal, Breitner and Associates

Laura translated my underlying penchant for obfuscatory asseveration into lucid exposition.
But seriously, folks, Laura is great. She has a wonderful eye and a deft touch. She took my political science-ese and helped make it far more readable and effective. I couldn’t have hoped for a better editor.

—Greg White
Professor of government, Smith College

You’re my secret weapon.

I would recommend
Laura MacKay to anyone who needs an editor, copy editor, or major rewrite person. She has a great tone and a tenacious mind for detail. Moreover, she really cares about a project and puts as much into it as if it were her own.
